I'm an environmental planner in San Francisco. I mainly work on water infrastructure projects for cities and counties. I joined BWEEMS during my senior year of college because I wanted to be connected to people in my field who looked like me. Through BWEEMS I was able to participate in the Society of Wetland Scientists and am still chairing their student section. I've really made connections in the group and feel like I have people I can reach out to if I need advice or if I decide to go to grad school. BWEEMS is doing awesome work.🤍
My name is Lys Isma and I am a PhD student in the Cnidarian Immunity Lab. My research focuses on corals and their immune response to Stony Coral Tissue Disease. I ultimately want to know how corals fight off infections. I joined BWEEMS because I needed community, because it is so easy to feel alone. BWEEMS has been a great support system for me as a first generation student.
Josette is a PhD student and NSF Graduate Research Fellow at Duke University. She is broadly focused on marine ecology, conservation and outreach. Her current research focuses on understanding the responses of coral reefs to human and climate change induced stressors.I became a BWEEMS member to find community and a sense of belonging. Through BWEEMS I am always inspired to be great, simply from interacting with other members and hearing all about their personal, and professional journeys as well as their outstanding accomplishments!
I am an ocean loving woman who is very passionate about wildlife and conservation. My educational background is in Marine Sciences but I have spent the last 10+ years working in the field of conservation and have had amazing opportunities to work with and help protect sea turtles, seabirds, monk seals, plants and invertebrates and have enjoyed every moment of it. However, one of the biggest things that I felt was missing from my professional life was having a community of BIPOC individuals with whom I could share my passions and experiences and from whom I could learn and be inspired. BWEEMS and all of the incredible women who are part of it, have very seamlessly filled that gap and I couldn't be more grateful.
