Communicating Science

Expert panel shares insights on translating complex scientific concepts for diverse audiences, from public engagement to policy advocacy in marine sciences.

Dr. Amelia Moore is an Associate Professor of Marine Affairs in the College of Environment and Life Sciences at the University of Rhode Island. She earned her Ph.D. in Sociocultural Anthropology from the University of California Berkeley and her B.A. in Environmental Biology from Columbia University. She approaches her research areas through the adaptive lens of feminist studies of science and Black ecologies, building bridges between critical theories of social difference, anthropology, post- and de-colonial studies, political ecology and socio ecological sciences.

Dr. Lekelia “Kiki” Jenkins is a marine sustainability scientist and Associate Professor at Arizona State University. She received her Ph.D. by pioneering a new field of study into the invention and adoption of marine conservation technology. Her research centers on the human dimensions of marine sustainability solutions, including fisheries conservation technologies and marine renewable energy. She received an Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship in Ocean Sciences and is a member of the National Academies of Sciences Ocean Studies Board.

Priya Shukla is a Ph.D. candidate in ecology at UC Davis. Her research explores the effects of climate change on shellfish aquaculture in California. She is working with the Hog Island and Tomales Bay Oyster Companies to explore whether stress hardening the commercially farmed Pacific Oyster through “heat shock” reduces the species’ susceptibility to disease outbreaks. Priya is an active science communicator and deeply invested in improving the accessibility of marine science.
