So You Want To Go To Grad School?

Learn when and how to contact advisors, prepare materials, and identify red flags with insights from seasoned academics.

Applying to graduate school can be a challenging and often mysterious process. Who do you contact? When should you contact an advisor? What materials do I need to get the attention of a potential advisor? What red flags should I look out for? In this workshop, we will address these questions and more to support you in the process of applying to and ultimately getting accepted into a graduate program.

Workshop facilitators:

Dr. Nikki Traylor-Knowles, University of Miami

Dr. Nikki Traylor-Knowles is an Assistant Professor in Marine Biology and Ecology at the University of Miami, Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences. She received her B.S. and M.S. in Cell and Molecular Biology from Johns Hopkins University, and her Ph.D. in Biology from Boston University. Dr. Traylor-Knowles is passionate about innovative ocean conservation solutions and mentorship of BIPOC. She leads the Cnidarian Immunity Laboratory which investigates the mechanisms of immune function in corals. Her lab is particularly focused on developing innovative actions for saving coral reefs. She also founded the Black Women in Ecology, Evolution and Marine Science and has become an advocate for Black women in science and academia.

Anjali D. Boyd, Duke University

Anjali is a 1st-year Ph.D. Student and Dean's Graduate Fellow at Duke University in the Nicholas School of the Environment. She received her B.S. in Marine Science from Eckerd College as an NOAA Hollings Scholar. Her research examines how species interactions (both intra and inter) and physical forces interact to regulate the recovery of foundation species to environmental stressors. Anjali aspires to develop novel ecosystem-based restoration and management practices to restore foundation species worldwide. She is fiercely committed to increasing representation of women and ethnic minorities in ocean sciences and elevating the voices and contributions of student and early-career scientists.
